Abstract

The goldenberry (Physalis peruviana L.) is a species plant native to the Andes and economic important for the region.  Due to its organoleptic characteristics and bioactive properties, it has aroused interest in the national and international market. Unfortunately, several organisms such as viruses, bacteria, nematodes and fungal cause serious diseases to the plant. The last affect both the crop growing and post-harvest of goldenberry. Gray mold is the disease caused by Botrytis cinerea. Round brown spots covered with mycelium giving the appearance of gray mold characterize this disease. This fungus causes general weakening of the leaf until its death. For this reason, the objective of this research was to identify B. cinerea in goldenberry crops in the northern area of Ecuador. Several plots located in the provinces of Imbabura and Pichincha were sampled. The fungal isolates obtained were identified phenotypically and by molecular techniques that analyzes the ITS region. Sequences were compared with two databases and showed a 100 % similarity for B. cinerea. Finally, through Koch's postulates, it was confirmed that B. cinerea was the phytopathogenic fungus that causes gray mold in leaves of goldenberry crops in Ecuador.
