Replacement of the esophagus with colon in a case of esophageal atresia
Main Article Content
Abstract
A two-day-old child was diagnosed with type B esophageal atresia. It was decided to reconstruct the esophagus using a segment of colon for this purpose.
Initially, a cervical esophagostomy and a gastrostomy were performed through which liquid with a high caloric content was administered for three years.
After this period, the second surgical stage was performed, consisting of transplanting the colon into an extrapleural retrosternal tunnel. Complementarily, the corresponding anastomoses to the cervical esophagus and stomach were performed, thus restoring esophageal continuity.
The mediate and immediate postoperative period did not present any complications. A medical control, after nine months of intervention, showed normality in terms of esophageal permeability and food ingestion.
