Darwin, Mammals and Galapagos
Main Article Content
Abstract
Actually, the diversity of mammals in the archipelago is low (especially if we do not take cetaceans into account) and of endemic mammals, it is particularly low (even taking cetaceans into account). The Galapagos mammals include two species of endemic sea lions, two species of native bats, seven species of endemic mice (four extant, three and one extinct subspecies), 26 species of whales and dolphins, and eight species of introduced mammals. This diversity is explained by the dispersal patterns and limitations of this group and the dissonance and impoverishment effects related to island biogeography models.
