Abstract

The present study aims to analyze changes in the temporal trend and describe the burden of mortality from breast cancer in Ecuador from 2001 to 2016. A time series ecological study was carried out. A joinpoint regression analysis (change points) was used for the analysis of the trends and the indicator for the potential years of life lost (PYLL) to describe burden of mortality from breast cancer. From 2001 to 2016, there were 6 788 deaths from breast cancer in Ecuador. In the joinpoint regression analysis of age adjusted mortality rates, the Annual Percent Change (APC) has showed a statistically significant rise of 1,49 % per year in the period 2001-2016 (p = 0,002), in the analysis of the crude mortality rates, the APC showed a statistically significant rise of 2,44 % per year (2001-2016, p < 0,001). The PYLL reported in 2001 has been increased for the year 2016 (6 688 to 12 275 PYLL). In Ecuador, a statistically significant increase in mortality from breast cancer has been detected during the period 2001-2016, doubling the potential years of life lost.
