Abstract

Abstract.- This review offers a summary of the characteristics of the family, as well as the most important events surrounding carabidology since 1779. Due to their evolutionary history, relatively stable taxonomy, high species richness, sensitivity to environmental change, easy collection methods, and wide distribution in the Andes, carabid beetles may be used in population studies, as well as ecology, fragmentation and habitat monitoring, and conservation biology
