Abstract

Most of the information available on species of the genus Drosophila associated to flowers has been collected in the tropics, however, studies about the interaction between Drosophila and flowers are scarce. In South America there are a few studies and in Ecuador it’s the first investigation concerning the interaction Drosophila-flower. To accomplish this, we sampled the Parque Arqueológico Rumipamba (Rumipamba Archaeological Park) located in the Metropolitan District of Quito, in the province of Pichincha. In established transects we collected Drosophila: 1. From every existing flower; 2. Pappobolus imbaburensis flowers only; 3. Verbesina sodiroi flowers only. A total of 413 individuals from 10 species were collected. We demonstrate that two species from the group Drosophila onychophora are related with flowers of the family Asteraceae: Drosophila verbesinae prefers the flowers of V. sodiroi and D. pappobolusae prefers the flowers of P. imbaburensis
