Antihistamines and Pregnancy III. Efectos Embriotóxicos de la Difenidramina
Main Article Content
Abstract
The possible embryotoxic effect of diphenhydramine was investigated in primiparous white mice, which were forced to drink solutions of antihistamine instead of pure water. The females drank, ad-libitum, these solutions throughout the pregnancy and lactation period. Concentrations from 1 x 10-4 to 1 x 10-3 were tested. The higher the drug concentration, the fewer mothers reached full term, many of them producing premature birth. With the 1 x 10-3 concentration, abortion occurred in 25% of the mothers between 8 and 10 days of pregnancy.
